South University Minimum Technology Requirements

Laptop or a Desktop?

Students can use either a laptop or a desktop computer, based on their preferences. A laptop will offer more portability and flexibility. It is recommended that computers be no more than 3 years old at the start of a program.

Chromebooks, Tablets, Smartphones, & Other Devices

Chromebooks (Chrome OS), tablets/IPads, and smartphones do not meet the minimum requirements for coursework at SU. SU recognizes these devices are convenient and can be used for some course functions, but they cannot be your primary device, nor can they be your only device. These devices offer limited functionality and will not work with some courseware used at SU. They should be considered supplemental devices to your primary computer/laptop.

General Hardware and Software Requirements

Click on the link below to find out the general requirements for South University courses. Additional hardware and software requirements vary by program and will be listed with course materials or provided during program orientation.

*Some course-specific software and Windows applications may not be compatible with Mac or Linux-based computers.

**Students who have online proctoring as part of their program may need a minimum of 5Mbps upload speed and 10Mbps download speed.

Note: Students who use personal devices to complete on-campus assessments may need additional items (i.e., privacy screen). Programs will inform students of unique hardware needs.
